Soldotna and Kenai

image_map

Short drive to Soldotna to a nice city campground right on the Kenai river.  They have suspended much of the fishing for a month so there is less demand for camp space and the campground is only about 20% full and very quiet.  Nice for us.

Soldotna and Kenai are mostly fishing towns (fishing is BIG in Alaska) with some tourism.  Kenai has some history going back centuries.  Much of it Russian influence.

We had lunch in Kenai sitting on a bench on a bluff overlooking the junction of the Kenai River with Cook Inlet.  On the other side of the bay are a chain of volcanoes.  There are houses on the bluff on the south side of the river that have nothing in their view but the Cook Inlet and the chain of snow covered mountains on the other side.  Too bad. (there was one for sale though)

Back to Soldotna to scope out a source of propane and then we will head south toward Homer.
