Adirondacks and Lake Placid

If you look at a map of New York State you will see a LARGE green area in the upper left portion of the state.  This is Adirondacks State Park.  Much of what is referred to as ‘Upstate New York’.  Vast area of mountains and lakes.  Where New Yorkers go to vacation.  We drove into the area on longest ‘scenic’ drive we could find.  Yes, the drive was pretty but have seen drives more scenic.  LOTS of lakes and camping/resort spots.  Would be a nice area to unwind for a while.  We camped in a very nice and quiet state park a few miles from Lake Placid and drove the car to check it out.  Relatively small, very touristy town on the shore of a quiet lake.  Home to two winter Olympics.  The skating pavilion and speed skating oval are right in town on the main street.  Downhill mountain is several miles away.  Ski jump ‘hills’ are south of town.  Many areas where cross country could be done.  There is a winter Olympics training center just west of town.  The main impact to us was the heavy tourism factor with little visible draw other than name.  Guess some people like that stuff.
