Vermont Country Store and Quechee Gorge
First stop – The Vermont Country Store.
First a comment on the roads we are taking. Vermont country roads are truly ‘country’ roads. Good, two lane roads with small shoulders. Easy driving at 45-50 mph in most places. Populated areas along the way are true ‘villages’. Definitely not cities, not towns, but small wide spots with a church or two, a post office, a store, maybe a school, and a few other buildings. The space between these areas is truly pastoral. Scattered farms, lots of trees, hills and dales, mountains and valleys, picture stuff. Here we are a little early for fall color but it is starting and is still pretty.
The Vermont Country Store is in just such a village. You don’t enter a village with any speed because you will miss most of it. The VCS is just the same. Two houses into the village is a small, barely marked drive that leads to parking behind the ‘store’.
I say ‘store’ because it is actually five or six house-like buildings all tied together.
There was sufficient parking area behind the store for the carbus which is always a concern when we visit these places. Hard to describe the VCS. Nostalgic and retro kitchenware, toys, candy, clothes, hardware, food, drinks, games, etc. And it goes on and on.
We spent over two hours wandering (and sampling ). Their site may help give a feel. www.vermontcountrystore.com
We went to the Weston store – the original.
We camped in Quechee State Park which is alongside Quechee Gorge – Vermont’s Grand Canyon. Pretty impressive.
This is a view straight down. It is deeper than it looks here in the photo.
