Yankee Candle and Norman Rockwell

Back west to catch a couple sites before we leave Massachusetts.

First off a visit to the Yankee Candle factory and flagship store.

Yankee Candle Store

Unfortunately there is no factory tour.  The store however is an event in itself.  It is huge with room after room after room.  Each room has a theme although the theme is pretty loose in some.  There is a winter room which has a winter display with Snow Village like houses and figures (all available for sale) and decorated trees.  It snows there every four minutes.  There is a Christmas room with ornaments, etc.  There is a country home room with folksy type decorations and kitchenware.  There is a more contemporary room with similar items.  A toy room.  A small snack bar/bakery.  Above all, there are candles everywhere.

All sizes, shapes, and above all – smells.  Smells I have never ‘seen’ or thought possible.  There is one that is supposed to smell like a man-cave.  Didn’t impress.  Don’t know what they were shooting for.  Perhaps toned down used sweat socks.  Just like Jelly Belly, it is amazing how they can come up with smells that closely match the real element.  Popcorn, pizza, holiday smells of course, various flowers and spices (far more than is your local store).  Prices are the same as your local store.  Cheapest candle in store was one you make yourself.  Drop layers of different colored and scented wax ‘sand’ into a jar and then they melt the top layer to seal it.  Sue did one and we will see how it works when we get home.

There are also talks on Rockwell the man and his work.  On the grounds is the studio where Rockwell worked the last twenty-five years of his life.

Rockwell Studio

The studio has been moved a few miles from where it stood in town to a its’ present (and scenic) location but is the real deal inside and out including all interior furnishings.  Docent In the studio was very knowledgeable and informative.Rockwell Studio

This picture was taken a block from the Elks lodge where we stayed tonight.  There are steeples of five different churches in the picture.
